More Mr. Newell memories: “It’s always wiser to invert the divisor!” In my jr. year in Alg. II, our class came up with, “We won’t be your friend if you invert the dividend!” Well, Mr. Newell was NOT pleased w/ our messing around w/ his saying! Another: In that same class one day we decided to start “marching” our feet up and down, making a racket, at about 5 min. to go before lunch (end of 4th period in that “geometry room”). He promptly came back with, “Well, ‘troops,’ that means you won’t be leaving when the bell rings!” Groans ensued. I know Tim Michael, Louie Huesmann, Deb Kirk , Kathy Walston Laird, and Carol Siegley Bohning were in that class. Anybody else on here remember that?

Amy Warner Bates Paula, Mr Newell was my bus driver for awhile and I was in the 5th grade. My brother Jeff and Jeff Cusick both rode the same bus. One day my brother got mad at me and I was sitting in the seat in front of him and he hit me over the head with his bag of Marbles. (yes marbles remember those??) I went to Mr. Newell and told him and he yelled at Jeff Cusick. When I told him it was my brother he said he didn’t want to get in any family matters and made me sit in the front seat. I was soooo mad! When I got off the bus I picked up a handful of rock and threw them back in the bus at him…..That promptly landed my butt in the office the next day. I carried that grudge for 7 years and never took a math class past freshman required couse! And guess where I ended up…Accounting profession….

Mary Beth Clinger Mr. Newell had a way of almost singing the word multiplicative! Does anyone remember that? As he would scratch the top of his head with chalk all over his face!

For the class of ’75, and some of the others close, remember math class with Mr. Newell? I remember certain members of the class wrapping wet paper towels around the thermostat and then complaining about how hot the room was getting. And we can’t forget having to stand in the corner. Major offense – throwing eraser.

Mr. Newell: “DeLouder, what are you doing?” My reply, “Nothing” Mr. Newell, “Fine, you may stand” My reply, “But Mr Newell I wasn’t doing anything”
Mr Newell, “Exactly, you were supposed to be jotting down the formula on the board” “You may stand” P.S Never did pronounce my name correct!!
