ZANESVILLE: Colonel Anthony D. Shaffer, Retired US Army Reserve, of Zanesville, died at 3:56pm Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at The Morrison House Hospice after a very courageous battle against cancer.

He was born February 15, 1963, in Peoria, Illinois. He graduated from Pleasant High School, Ohio University, and Capital University Law School. Tony was a retired Colonel of the United States Army, where he served as a helicopter pilot. He was stationed in Camp Gary Owen, South Korea; Ft. Carson, Colorado; Ft. Knox, Kentucky; and Ft. Polk, Louisiana, while on active duty. After transitioning to the Army Reserve, he served his country in many additional capacities. Mr. Shaffer was also a practicing attorney, specializing in health care law at Squire, Sanders, & Dempsey in Columbus, Ohio. He was also a strong supporter of Bishop Fenwick Elementary School and Rosecrans High School, where he served on the School Board.

a-shaffer2He is survived by his wife, Lynn A. Richardson Shaffer, whom he married on May 23, 1987 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Zanesville, Ohio; his four sons, Jason A. Shaffer of Zanesville, Jeffrey L. Shaffer of Zanesville, Joseph W. Shaffer of Zanesville, and Jared R. Shaffer of Zanesville; two brothers, Tim (Darla) Shaffer of Gilbert, South Carolina, and Tom (Sarah) Shaffer of Worthington, Ohio; his mother, Karen J. Snyder Shaffer of Marion, Ohio, and father, Donald W. Shaffer of Washington, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Lori Richardson, of Michigan City, Indiana, and Lisa (Chris) Richardson Olney, of Zanesville; his uncle, Dennis (Peggy) Snyder of Arizona, and aunt, Marilyn (Doug) Shaffer Burge of Alabama; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. with Military honors to commence at 7:45 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2012, at Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father Jordan Turano as celebrant. Burial will be take place 11:00am Monday July 16th at Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the “Col. Anthony D. Shaffer Memorial Scholarship” fund, in care of The Community Bank, Zanesville, Ohio. This scholarship was established to provide tuition assistance to an incoming Bishop Rosecrans freshman student.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave. Zanesville Ohio.
